Photogmusic, Partus Films and Ottawa’s Voice Box bring you the 4in1 Sessions. Each session will take place in one of Ottawa’s many historical parks bringing local acts and touring bands together for free public performances.

ARTIST
Bozikovic is a Toronto singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who “maps out introspective narratives with clear, evocative turns of phrase, then uses her nuanced delivery to magnify each emotional dip and swerve” (Sarah Liss CBC). Her songs ebb and flow with quietly ornate moments – a riot of strings here, a whimsical Moog solo there. On both her debut Lost August (Dec 2009) and her upcoming release This is How we Swim (Fall 2012), she worked with co-producer Sandro Perri and Heather Kirby (Ohbijou) to embellish her keys arrangements with experimental techniques and lush orchestration. DUNDONALD PARK
The park commemorates the Soviet Defector Igor Gouzenko who was a cipher clerk for the Soviet Embassy to Canada in Ottawa, Ontario. He defected on September 5, 1945, with 109 documents on Soviet espionage activities in the West. This forced Prime Minister Mackenzie King to call a Royal Commission to investigate espionage in Canada.
Gouzenko exposed Joseph Stalin’s efforts to steal nuclear secrets, and the technique of planting sleeper agents. The “Gouzenko Affair” is often credited as a triggering event of the Cold War.
It was from this park that Royal Canadian Mounted Police agents monitored Gouzenko’s apartment across the street on the night men from the Soviet embassy came looking for Gouzenko. The memorial plaques are the result of four years of effort by history enthusiast Andrew Kavchak, who first came across Gouzenko’s case, and decided that “the first major international event of the Cold War” deserved a memorial.

Photogmusic and Partus Films bring you the 4in1 Sessions; four bands in one park….every so often. This monthly event is the brainchild of Ming Wu, the founder of photogmusic. In the heart of Ottawa’s Chinatown district a vocal shaman is helping empower and enlighten others through a series of vocal workshops. In our latest promotional video we sat down with the founder to discuss his workshops and why he believes our culture has stopped singing in community.

“Voice Emergent‘s founder, Barclay McMillan, has a passion for sharing his innovative voicework that was fueled by his own personal experience of the healing power of sound.

Barclay has been creating opportunities for people to discover, or recover, their singing voices and explore them in a context of healing and well-being since 1991. He offers a range of courses and informal singing gatherings in Ottawa and has taken his work to other parts of Canada, the US and Europe.

A graduate of Carleton University and the University of Toronto, Barclay completed doctoral studies in practical Divinity (D. Min.) at UCS, Oakland. His dissertation, “Dancing Voice, Moving Spirit”, is a heuristic study of the transformative experience of participants in his LifeSong program.

He is a former teacher, naval officer and radio broadcaster. He was the host of Mostly Music, the CBC’s classical music flagship. Barclay has contributed many articles to The Encyclopedia of Music in Canada and The Canadian Encyclopedia. An experienced public speaker, he has entertained service clubs, university societies, churches, and medical conventions with his good-humoured, articulate enthusiasm for the human voice and its potential.”

Partus Films will be releasing Ferrishweel’s debut music video for ” UN PEU AU NORD ET SANS DISTORSION”. This live performance was shot @ LE TEMPORAIRE and features – Philippe Charbonneau, Mathieu Charbonneau, Simon Trottier, Olivier Fairfield, Pietro Amato & Erla Axelsdóttir.

Five years ago, in a backroom apartment in Montreal, Simon Trottier and Mathieu Charbonneau sought refuge from the distortion and began synthesizing what would become Ferrishweel. The instrumental project would grow over the next few years and result intwo albums, “Songs from the Backroom”, their 2009 debut and “Un Peu Nord Et Sans Distorsion”, their latest endeavor receiving much praise since it’s 2011 drop.

“There is definitely an emphasis on keeping the acoustic nature of the instruments that we play” says Mathiueu, sitting on a flowery couch surrounded by mannequins and kitty cat paintings at Le Temporaire in Gatineau Hull.

Simon Trottier recalls pre-producing the second album with his friend while on tour in the mountains of British Colombia.  Simon felt compelled to infuse nature’s imagery and essence into the music. Out of these conversations, Mathiueu would birth the title of their next endeavor.

Not devoid of all things amplified, “Un Peu Nord” strikes a balance between its acoustic underpinnings and its electric leanings; a democratic blend of the past and present, structure and anti-structure, the organic and artificial.

When asked about the nature of the music, Mathiue remarks,  “Some songs are really composed and others have much more liberty in between sections for spontaneous noises. In fact, we know that some sections will always be totally improvised.”
